The 18 holes at Augusta Ranch Golf Club play to par 61. They string nearly 3,800 yards from three sets of tees, cover 80 acres of turf, and deliver a mix of challenges that belie all preconceived notions of shorter layouts. As the prime amenity of this east Mesa golf community, the casual Southern-styled Augusta Ranch Golf Club features a fast and friendly course everyone can enjoy.

There's a name for courses in this category, but such an antiquated descriptor is unjust. Augusta Ranch is more accurately a collection of par 3s and shorter par 4s in keeping with championship length courses. Course designer Bill Phillips developed equitable challenges for every level of player and in doing so has given new meaning to golf sans par 5s.

His inviting configuration features seven par 4s that vary from 274 to 379 yards from the Gold tees. Several fall in that nefarious "drivable-par 4" range where overconfidence predictably sets up a dicey second shot. Wily terrain, a few water hazards, and strategic bunkering make up any differences for their length.

The 11 par 3s play from 110 to 190 yards, and while some appear straightforward, others throw everything in the golfer's path from water, bunkers, swales and mounding to decisively tiered greens.

The risk for a big finish is considerable on the 316-yard, par-4 Number 18. Water rides the left side and cuts in front left of center of the green. A group of pines threatens from the right, narrowing the landing for longer drives.

In 2009, the course added a full service kitchen. A great complement to the facility with its robust menu, the 19th hole is now just as good as the first 18. Definitely save some time to enjoy its comforts.

Short courses are invariably marketed to beginners, junior golfers, and senior citizens. While Augusta Ranch is unquestionably a perfect venue for these players, this layout also goes out of its way to challenge even accomplished players. Suffice it to say you'll find genuine golf at a great rate, and par is par after all.
