Nestled at the base of South Mountain, The Legacy Golf Resort was the first fully contained golf resort built in the Greater Phoenix area in more than 10 years. Following its October 1999 opening, the resort hosted the 2000 LPGA Standard Register Ping Tournament, challenging some of the LPGA's finest touring professionals.
The 328 all-suite resort, owned by Shell Vacations, Sunbelt Holdings, and Carefree Partners, offers vacation ownership opportunities and is surrounded by a gated residential community. Phoenix-based golf course architects Gary Panks Associates designed the course, which earned a ranking as one of the top 50 Great Service Facilities in the US by Golf Digest in 2004. The Legacy Golf Resort is open to the public as well as to resort guests and property owners.
Emerging from 280 acres of farmland along Baseline Road, the course spreads across 170 acres of what was once a renowned ranch owned by Dwight B. Heard, founder of the acclaimed Heard Museum. His historic Sierra Vista ranch house still stands near the first tee.
Gary Panks created an invigorating layout with traditional characteristics. His design challenges golfers of every skill level to negotiate well-protected landing areas, masterly bunkering, and large rolling greens.
Water comes into play on the back nine on Number 12, a 459-yard par 4 on the tee shot. A monstrous 10,000-square-foot sand bunker separates the elevated green from the water on the 580-yard par-5 Number 14. It's an aesthetically pleasing hole, but with challenging risk/reward options on the approach. (An even larger bunker threatens from the left side of the 200-yard par-3 Number 17.) The same lake comes into play on the following short par 3. The course finishes on a historic note, as the original 1902 Heard Ranch grain silos (once the tallest structures in Maricopa County) still stand near the 18th fairway.
The Legacy pro shop features a tasteful selection of brand-name men's and women's golf apparel and accessories, including top-of- the-line equipment and exclusive golf memorabilia.
