Longbow Golf Club captures the essence of Arizona golf with a spectacular desertstyle layout firmly tied to the traditions of the game. Sweeping views of nearby Red Mountain as well as the McDowell, Usery, and Superstition mountain ranges do their part to set the stage for a wonderful day of golf in the dramatic Sonoran Desert. Plus, purists appreciate the beauty and challenge of Longbow's coregolf experience: No homes or roads intrude on the interior of the playing field. And short distances from green to the next tee make walking a pleasure.
It is this blend of aesthetic charm and traditional challenge that lies at the heart of Longbow's appeal. In fact, Golfweek recently honored Longbow as one of the "Top 100 Resort Courses in the Country."
In 2003 the course's original designer, Ken Kavanaugh, was called on to improve the golf experience. Armed with more acreage and a keen sense of the game, his redesign resulted in an entertaining array of risk/reward holes that appeal to the competitive spirit. No. 17 is a great example. As a short par 4, it encourages aggressive play from the tee; however, bunkers and a large desert area to the right loom as potent penalties. The layup is much less treacherous; although the wedge into the relatively small green must be nipped cleanly to get it near the hole.
The renovation also yielded a sprawling new practice facility and a contemporary-style clubhouse. The unique patio is the hub of the clubhouse: cooling misters offer liberation from the heat; a gigantic roaring fireplace warms the cool, crisp winter air and plasma TVs tuned into the day's big sporting event adorn the walls. It's the ideal embodiment of the Arizona indoor/outdoor lifestyle.
Another Daedalus Development, professionally managed by OB Sports, Longbow has also emerged as an excellent venue for competitive events. It has hosted many prestigious tournaments including numerous Gateway Tour events, the US Amateur qualifying, and the AJGA Heather Farr Classic. The event staff is dedicated to ensuring every event—from a charity golf tournament to a wedding reception—creates lasting memories.
