The world-renowned sandstone panoramas that mark Sedona as Red Rock Country make the Sedona Golf Resort a revered stop for golfers. Here the game of golf is as much a visual experience as a test of skill.

Golf architect Gary Panks catapulted his career with his design for Sedona Golf Resort. It winds through a cedar-strewn valley where Hollywood’s Old West shot it up long before golfers arrived.

The first hole is a gentle short par 4 to open the round and allows guests to take in the surroundings before getting down to the strategy ahead.

The entire course is in full view from the precipice at the par-3 Number 2 where the tee shot floats to the tiered green 50 feet below. From there the course works its way up the slope of the far mesa to the signature scenic vista—one of Arizona’s most photographed golf holes. After the lengthy uphill pull at the 522-yard par-5 Number 9, Number 10 is a testy 200-yard par-3 where a little local knowledge pays a big dividend.

Much of the attraction to this golf course lies in Panks’ subtle contrasts.

Where simplicity marks one fairway, players must negotiate bunkers, sandstone walls, or water on another. Panks ensured a gentle transition through the varying elevation. From the highest point at Number 11, the course weaves its way into the valley and back over the first ridge. It closes on a short par 4 that welcomes a gamble from elevated tees, daring to fly the sandstone remnants of one of the original homesteads in the Sedona area. The red sand in the bunkers adds additional local flavor.

Sedona Golf Resort is a two-hour drive north from Phoenix, off Interstate 17 in Village of Oak Creek.
